School Council Vacancies

After many years of service on St. Vincent School Council and St. Vincent School Advisory Council, members of the Executive are stepping back from their roles in the hope of engaging parents, promoting new ideas and continuing advocacy of the St. Vincent School Community.

The St. Vincent School Council is an important forum through which members of school community play an advisory role in school improvement planning. This collaborative relationship with the school builds meaningful, two-way communication and supports respectful interactions among education partners. Our school council is a structured group of parents, principals, teachers, and community representatives whose purpose is to advise the principal and the school board respecting matters relating to St. Vincent school. It is a means for parents and community members to work together with St. Vincent school to support and enhance student learning.

Vacancies for the 2020-2021 school year are as follows:

·         Chair/President

·         Vice Chair/Vice President

·         Secretary

·         Director at Large

If participating on School Council interests you, please contact the principal at 8229web@ecsd.net and your name will be added to the nomination list.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As the 2019-2020 school year comes to a close, we recognize the unique circumstances we find ourselves in.

Teaching and learning took on a new look as we engaged in remote learning to deliver lessons and activities. We are grateful for your support as we embarked on this journey together.

As you are aware, the focus of learning in the K-6 Program this term remained on Literacy and Numeracy in a reduced program that focused on key skills and knowledge to support your child in the next level of their learning.

Assessments and grading in Power School are reflective of work completed prior to the cancellation of classes due to COVID-19, as well as the reduced outcomes covered during the period of remote learning.

We are aware that families were in unique situations during this time. Students who were on track to progress to the next level prior to COVID-19, will progress to the next level. However, indication will be made on the Student Report Card where outcomes were not able to be assessed due to a lack of evidence and/or participation during the remote learning period.

Please contact the school office if you have any questions or concerns regarding the final report card.

Thank you,

St. Vincent School Staff

A message from Alberta Education regarding students with disabilities

Alberta Education has instituted a help line and email for parents of students, particularly those with disabilities, during COVID-19 and at-home learning.

The line is 780-422-6548 (toll-free by first dialing 310-0000, followed by the 10-digit phone number) or via email at: studentsupport@gov.ab.ca.

Even with the excellent work being done by teachers and school divisions supporting the learning and inclusion of students with disabilities, we know that the changes in how education is being delivered is affecting students differently. For families of students with disabilities, there may be questions about their child's program now that the traditional delivery process has changed.

Alberta Education has established the help line and email to assist families with their questions and connect them to their boards where appropriate. This could include key members of the school district (teacher, principal, school district leadership, school board) to find collaborative solutions to meeting their child's learning needs at home.

The Parent Help Line will be answered Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Administrator's Message

Prayer to Mary, Mother of Hope

Mary, Mother of hope,

Accompany us on our journey!

Teach us to proclaim the living God;

Help us to bear witness to Jesus,

The one Saviour.

Make us kindly toward our neighbours,

Welcoming to the needy,

Concerned for justice,

Impassioned builders of a more just world.

Intercede for us

As we carry out our work in history,

Certain that the Father's plan Will be fulfilled.

Dawn of a new world,

Show yourself the Mother of hope

And watch over us!

The birth of your Son

Was the dawn of our salvation.

May we allow the Spirit

To work in our lives

In an effort to bring us closer

To lasting peace.

-          Pope John Paul II, 2003.

May is the month of Hope and new beginnings. It is also the month of Devotion to Mary, the Holy Mother. The tradition of honouring the Virgin Mary dates all the way back to the ancient Greeks who dedicated the month of May to Artemis, the goddess of fecundity. Romans also claimed May to honour Flora, the goddess of bloom or blossoms. They celebrated "floral games" at the end of April and petitioned Flora's intercession for all that blooms. In medieval times, a tradition arose of expelling winter at this time of year, since May 1 was considered the start of new growth.
It was during the Middle Ages (11th century) that the idea of giving the month of May to Mary began with an old tradition, the "30-Day Devotion to Mary", which was originally held August 15 to September 14. During the month, special devotions to Mary were organised, and this custom, which began in Italy eventually spread elsewhere.

While we do not worship Mary, we honour her as Jesus' mother, as the first and perfect disciple, and for her continual advocacy for us for eternal salvation. Honoring her through devotions and prayer is a way we can continue to grow in our Faith and grow in hope.

May is a busy month for us at St. Vincent: PATs, field trips, celebrations, and beginning the transition to year end would be taking place. While we are apart at this time, we know that hope prevails and that in the future we will get the chance to learn together again.
