School Information

Our Namesake

École Our Lady of the Prairies School is located in the Callingwood Community. Students have come to the school from Callingwood South, Lessard, Westridge, Willowby and Oleskiw communities. École Our Lady of the Prairies School opened in 1982. The Good Shepherd Starter School, that had begun the year before, was moved to this location.

Since the French Immersion program was added in September of 2003, the students come from south of 87 avenue and west of 170 street.

In the early days of our country, pioneer families migrated from other lands to find new homes on the Canadian prairies. They brought with them very few possessions but a strong Catholic faith and a deep devotion of Our Lady.

Times were very hard for them, yet they never lost hope. Faith in God's Providence and the Blessed Virgin's intercession saw them through the worst trails and difficulties. The pioneers had many simple and beautiful ways of honoring the Blessed Mother. To keep alive and to promote and spread this devotion to Our Lady and her Divine Son, a foundation was established in 1957. "Our Lady of the Prairies" was chosen as a simple and natural title that would bring the prairie people closer to one another. Our Lady of the Prairies day is celebrated on March 21st.
